Mobile Search with My Location

Google has announced Mobile Search with My Location, for devices running on Windows Mobile. By either using GPS or cell-ID, Google can tap into your location and deliver location-specific information. It uses the Gears Geolocation API to approximates your actual location using the same Cell ID technology used by Google maps for mobile.

Previously, the system returned results based on the last location entered. The new Search with My Location feature will be able to give much more precise results. My Location (based on cell tower location), kicks in faster than GPS in most cases, so you can access your location even faster on the map. It also works reliably indoors (unlike GPS) and doesn’t drain your phone battery at the rate that GPS does.

You have to specifically opt in to use the service and you can always change that setting. Google assures users that personally identifiable information is never associated with you location.
