This Radio Controlled truck has a Linksys WRT54GL router and internet camera. It could be driven via the internet from up to 500 meters (1640 feet) away.
Jonathan Bennett added a network camera, router, heavier batteries, extra circuits, and a whole bunch of wires. It adds a lot of extra weight that the car wasn’t designed for, so he bought a pretty large RC car for $5 at Value Village. Twenty-one year old Bennett flashed the router with Linux Open-WRT firmware. He modified the WRT54GL to have 2 serial ports and a 1GB SD Card. The SD card is not used in this project, but one of the serial ports is.
Bennett is obviously an advanced hobbist with major hardware and software hacking skills. He found the Linksys WRT54G Ultimate Hacking, book to be useful. Google Books has the whole book viewable. It can also be downloaded here: (password: knowfree.net) This book outlines how to add a serial port, setup the software, as well as a bunch of other hacks.
The car can be driven without line of sight using a Panasonic BL-C1A network camera. A tour de force.
