Funai of Japan has managed to come up with a new reflective display that does away with the backlight - something unheard of in conventional LCD displays. According to Funai, this new breakthrough would mean the display sips a mere 1% of electricity per square centimeter comapred to conventional LCDs. While the backlight is removed, it has been replaced by dyes which are able to change color when exposes to an electric current. Needless to say, the clarity is stunning enough to be on par with characters printed on a piece of paper. Other superior aspects of this new display include 80% reflectivity for easier reading even under direct sunlight. There is no word on pricing, but Funai will probably introduce 7" to 14" sizes of such displays sometime next year.
